Why learn in groups?
Real Buddhism is profound and thus hard to learn by oneself. If you try to learn by yourself from reading books without a teacher, most likely you retain little and comprehend only vaguely.
But if you were to learn in a class, with a group, and share your views with others through discussions and debates, you would quickly gain a much deeper understanding and can retain it steadfastly.
Another common experience we may all have is the difficulty of keeping up with our Buddhist practice. Though inspired to practice, we are often tied up with busy worldly matters and relationships. Our motivation to practice Buddhism eventually dies down over time. But if we join a study group, we will receive encouragement and support from many friends.
